Global War on Terrorism: Observations on Funding, Costs, and Future Commitments
Key passage for the future of contracting jobs: While it would appear that reducing the number of troops in theater could lower costs for these operations, we have seen from previous operations in Bosnia and Kosovo that costs may rise due to the increased use of contractors to replace the military personnel. Bases still have to be maintained, even with fewer military members in them.

Vital Military Jobs Go Unfilled, Study Says
The military is falling far behind in its effort to recruit and re-enlist soldiers for some of the most vital combat positions in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a new government report. The report, completed by the Government Accountability Office, shows that the Army, National Guard and Marines signed up as few as a third of the Special Forces soldiers, intelligence specialists and translators that they had aimed for over the last year.

Contractors on Deployed Military Operations: UK Policy and Doctrine
Department of Defense (DoD) initiatives to use contractors on deployed military operations remains a contentious issue in U.S. military transformation. Despite the intense debates surrounding the benefits and costs of DoD outsourcing, little attention has focussed on similar Ministry of Defence (MoD) initiatives underway in the United Kingdom (UK). Since the UK and United States are likely to remain close allies in future expeditionary deployments, the MoD’s approach to contractor support is a salient case study for the DoD and U.S. armed services.
