Contractor deaths top 1,000
The death toll for private contractors in the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has topped 1,000, a stark reminder of the risks run by civilians working with the military in roles previously held by soldiers. A further 13,000 contractors have been wounded.

Michael W. Butler, senior deputy program manager for DynCorp International’s CIVPOL program in Iraq, was killed today near Tikrit when the vehicle in which he was traveling was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade.

Iraq tally omits contract workers
In a largely invisible cost of the war in Iraq, nearly 800 civilians working under contract to the Pentagon have been killed and more than 3,300 hurt doing jobs normally handled by the U.S. military, according to figures gathered by the Associated Press.

DynCorp Security Supervisor Killed in Baghdad
Glen Joyce, 40, of Helderkruin, Roodepoort, South Africa, was killed February 15th in Iraq in a mortar attack. One other DynCorp International employee and four Iraqis were injured in the same attack, which occurred in Baghdad at approximately 6:30 a.m. local time.

Truck driver shot was a US KBR employee
The truck driver shot and killed by Australian troops in Baghdad after he ignored signals to stop at a security checkpoint for the Australian Embassy was working for the major US contractor KBR, a subsidiary of Halliburton.

2 Americans, 4 Afghans Killed in Bombing
A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a compound for security contractors in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing two Americans and four Afghans, a company official and witnesses said. The bomber attacked on foot as the men left the Kandahar city compound of the Houston-based security company USPI.

SOC-SMG Contractor to receive medal
In a ceremony Monday at Fort Bragg, Brian James Wagoner will be awarded the Defense of Freedom medal, which was created in 2001 to honor killed or injured private contractors or civilian employees of the Department of Defense. He was killed in Iraq from an improvised roadside bomb.
